Due to all of the hype around gluten free eating for weight loss, I thought I should address the many amazing benefits of whole grains.
First - what are they? Whole grains are grains where all 3 parts of the kernal remain intact - the bran, germ and endosperm.
The bran is where most of the fibre comes from, the germ is where most of the antioxidants are, and the endosperm, where most of the starch is.
Whole grains have all of these 3 parts intact - so you can be assured that you are getting the many benefits of the vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.
Whole grains should be a staple in our diets...whether it is oatmeal in the morning, quinoa salad for lunch, bulgur with dinner...snacking on popcorn...choose whole grains wherever you can!
Refined grains is when the bran and germ are removed and the starchy endosperm is left....enriched grains just mean they have added back iron and 3 B vitamins...big deal?! It is like giving you a hundred bucks and getting 4 bucks back...you are being robbed of nutriiton!
Look for whole grains as the first ingredient...this is great way to ensure you are making the best choice!
The Healthy Grains Institute sent me some great examples of whole grain products...check them out!
I am super passionate about helping people understand the science of food and making it work for them. I love coming up with healthy and tasty meals for my family and sharing them with you!
